A Letter from a Shelter Manager:

As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all …a view from the inside, if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the “back” of an animal shelter for just one day. ONE DAY!

Maybe if you saw the life drain from these sad, lost, & confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don’t even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it’s not a cute little puppy anymore.

So how would you feel if you knew that there’s a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter where it’s going to be dumped? Purebred or not …about 50% of all of the dogs that are “owner surrenders” or “strays” are purebred dogs!

“We’re moving and can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really?!

“The dog got bigger than we thought it would.” How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?

They always tell me, “we just don’t want to have to stress about finding a place for her. We know she’ll get adopted, she’s a good dog.”

Odds are your pet won’t get adopted. How stressful do you think it is to be dumped at a shelter? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn’t full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it.

If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don’t, your pet won’t get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of it’s pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the “Bully” breeds (Pit Bull, Rottie, Mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked through the front door. Those dogs just don’t get adopted. It doesn’t matter how ‘sweet’ or ‘well behaved’ they are. If your dog doesn’t get adopted within it’s 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn’t full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long. Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.

Here’s a little Euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being “put-down.” First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk …happy, wagging their tails …until they get to “The Room.” Every one of them freaks out and puts the brakes on when they get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there. It’s strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs, depending on their size and how freaked out they are. Then aeuthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the “pink stuff”. Hopefully your pet doesn’t panic from being restrained and jerk. I’ve seen needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood & deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don’t just “go to sleep,” sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. When it all ends, your pet’s corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back …with all of the other animals killed that day …waiting to be picked up like garbage.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this: DON’T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE.

I hope someone will walk into my shelter and say “I saw this and it made me want to adopt.”

Animal Cruelty

Jun-6-2009 By zahnyx

All animals feel pain!

….When people think of cruelty, they often think of a person starving or beating an animal. In other words, they think of actions that are against the law. They may also think of things done by other nations, such as whale hunting, bear farming, bull fighting, or clubbing seal pups.

….Certainly all of these actions are cruel,
but animals also suffer much closer to home.
Mostly people don’t think about everyday suffering!

Animals killed for food, battery hens, laboratory animals, animals that are trapped, poisoned, or hunted for sport. These actions aren’t illegal, but they cause suffering to more individuals than people who starve or beat their animals. ….

….So what is cruelty? In what ways do animals suffer?

….Pain. All animals with backbones (vertebrates) feel pain like we do. Hooking fish, fire branding cattle, catching animals in steel-jaw traps, cutting tails off lambs and beaks off hens, all cause pain.

….Stress and Fear. Vertebrate animals feel anxiety like we do. Transport is very stressful for animals, especially live export overseas. Being pulled out of the water and left to suffocate causes great stress to fish. Dairy calves taken from their mother after 1 day and trucked to slaughter at 1 week of age suffer greatly.

….Frustration. Animals need more than food and water for their well-being – they also need to be able to carry out the behaviour that is natural to their species. Otherwise they become frustrated and may develop abnormal behaviour, just like a mentally disturbed person. Signs of frustration can be seen in battery hens, pigs in tiny stalls, rabbits in laboratory cages, foxes and mink on fur farms, and some zoo and circus animals. ….

.Animal Cruelty in…

….Factory Farms

A chick being held with cruelty

….Animals in factory farms are treated as machines, not sentient beings who feel pain and emotions just like dogs or cats. Their welfare is disregarded in the name of profit, and they suffer horrendous conditions in mind boggling numbers. On standard commercial egg farms, hens are kept in such small cages that they cannot even lift one wing. Factory farmed animals have their beaks, tails, horns and genitals chopped off with no anesthesia. All animals on factory farms are kept intensively and painfully confined. At the end of their miserable lives, they are all sent to violent commercial slaughterhouses where stunning procedures often fail, and the animals are dismembered or skinned while still conscious.

….In order to boycott factory farm cruelty altogether, as well as the devastating effects of factory farming on the environment and human health, compassionate people all over the world are going vegan or vegetarian. ….

….Laboratories

A victim of vivisection

….Vivisection is the cutting into or dissecting of a live animal. Billions of non-human animals have been burnt, crushed, sliced, electrocuted, poisoned with toxic chemicals, and psychologically tormented in the name of scientific curiosity. What have we learned from all of this suffering? That animal research is inherently unethical, inevitably wasteful, and wholly unreliable. The U.S. squanders approximately $18 billion per year on animal experiments, much of which is funded by taxpayers, even though alternatives are less expensive and can be used repeatedly. And what do we get for our dollars? “Too much suffering for too little knowledge.” ….

….Fur Farms

The cruelty of fur farms

….More than 45 million animals worldwide, including raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, and chinchillas, are raised in cages and killed each year for their fur. Not only are cage-raised animals killed inhumanely, but they suffer from numerous physical and behavioral abnormalities induced by the stress of caging conditions. After spending their short lives in squalid conditions, animals raised on fur farms are killed by cruel methods that preserve the pelt, such as gassing, neck-breaking and anal electrocution. Some are skinned alive!

….Animals living in the wild are the unseen victims of human exploitation.

Their lives are cruelly cut short for the sake of greed, vanity, and the so-called thrill of sadistic bloodsports

Every form of violence and cruelty imaginable is inflicted upon wild animals and yet the public is largely unaware of these abuses. ….

….Trapping

A victim of traps

….Millions of wild animals, including bobcats, coyotes, foxes, lynx, raccoons, and wolves, suffer and die in traps each year. Countless dogs and cats, deer, birds and other animals—including threatened and endangered animals—are also injured and killed each year by the indiscriminate traps. Traps, including steel-jaw leghold traps, body-gripping traps, and wire neck snares, are inhumane devices that inflict great pain and suffering. ….

….Hunting

A deer victim of hunting

….Although it was a crucial part of humans’ survival 100,000 years ago, hunting is now nothing more than a violent form of recreation that the vast majority of hunters do not need for subsistence.

….Many animals suffer prolonged, painful deaths when they are injured but not killed by hunters.

….Hunting disrupts migration and hibernation patterns and destroys families. For animals like wolves, who mate for life and live in close-knit family units, hunting can devastate entire communities. The stress that hunted animals suffer—caused by fear and the inescapable loud noises and other commotion that hunters create—also severely compromises their normal eating habits, making it hard for them to store the fat and energy that they need in order to survive the winter.

There is someting so very dreadful, so satanic... tormenting those who have never harmed us, and who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power

 Animal Rights

Dog Duct Taped, Tossed Like Trash

In cases such as these, it is truly tragic when anyone can even think about harming a small, defenseless creature who is purely innocent and still just a baby. In the case of little Lotti, she was found in an empty lot in Phoenix, AZ by a man who was looking at graffiti and noticed her, thankfully, or she would not have survived. She was just a tiny little long-haired Chihuahua mix, left to suffer and die a horrible and lonely death.

Lotti

“It was around her head and neck, duct taped around. So they really tried to make her suffer,” said Marisa McHugh, with Arizona Humane Society. “This is horrible.. How they can do that to an innocent animal and walk away to let her suffer like that?”

And as if this story could be any worse than it is, it’s believed it’s possible that the heartless individuals responsible for this horrific crime may be juveniles, as young as 12 and 14 years old.

“The witness on scene saw three or four 12 to 14 year olds right there in the area. As soon as they saw him and he saw them, they were very suspicious and took off immediately,” said Stacie DaBolt, field operations manager with the Arizona Humane Society.

The human society plans to investigate and hopes to find some leads. They just cannot believe anyone would do such a thing to such a sweet little dog who is still just a baby.

“She’s so sweet, that’s why we don’t understand it. I mean, she’s been a good dog. While I was putting the catheter in, she never tried to bite or nip,” said Mc Hugh. “She’s just been a perfect dog”.

Sometimes there are no words. Only shoulders to lean on, hands to hold onto, and hugs to comfort you as best they can. I'm here for you.

Unfortunately animal cruelty crimes committed by children or adolescences are not uncommon and often go unreported. Adults who are aware or even witness these heartless children and/or adolescences abusing, torturing or even killing animals are actually ignorant or possible indifference enough to believe that these cruel children are merely “curious” or “going through a phase” or come up with any other ridiculous excuses to cover up the fact that their child/adolescent is a heartless and violent individual who will continue to harm more innocent animals…and eventually humans.

People who are violent to animals rarely stop there.

This very tragic case is only a reminder how common and often how horrific animal cruelty is in reality. People who believe that animal cruelty crimes “don’t matter” or “nothing to be concerned with” are incredibly wrong and this innocent puppy almost lost her life because of cruel children who think harming and killing a defenseless and innocent animal is “funny” or “cool”. I am thankful that there was a kind and caring individual who was there and actually saved this beautiful puppy before it was too late. How anyone can even think, let alone actually try to duct tape and leave a helpless puppy to die a slow and lonely death is truly disgusting and horrific.

Horrible cruelty to an innocent dog

I do hope and pray that this innocent puppy makes a full recovery and will be placed with a loving family who will never harm her and will love her for her entire life. I also pray that law enforcement does find the heartless children responsible for almost murdering Lotti and punish these psychopaths to the full extent of the law. Anyone who can harm a living creature as innocent and as vulnerable as a puppy will surely escalate to harming humans in the future if something is not done to stop them immediately. Serial killers Jeffery Dahmer and Richard Chase had a history of torturing and murdering animals before ultimately murdering humans. This isn’t a coincidence, it was foreshadowing.

Animal cruelty

If you witness or suspect any case of animal cruelty or animal neglect, please report it immediately to your local law enforcement and/or animal rescue organization. If you suspect a child or adolescent of committing animal cruelty, do not call CPS (Child Protective Service), call law enforcement and/or animal rescue organization immediately because regardless of the child’s age, animal cruelty is a crime. Confronting the child’s parents are often ineffective because parents of children who commit animal cruelty are known to excuse their deviant child’s behavior or fail to ensure that their child will not harm another animal. Law enforcement agencies and even animal rescue organization will confront the child’s parents and take immediate if not legal actions to prevent any future crimes against animals from occurring again.

Help us fight cruelty. TAKE ACTION!

Animals deserve justice regardless of whatever age their abuser/murderer is. Animal cruelty is a very serious crime that must be stopped before any more innocent animals are lost from this cruelty. Please use your voice to help save these innocent animals before it is too late.

It was a human I loved who let me end up this way. And a stranger who gave me a second chance. I'm sorry you don't think I deserve it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us and we will respond as soon as we are able.

It's not over. One person, one day, makes a difference.

If Animals Spoke Our Language

If Animals Spoke our Language

Poem by: Vegan Poet

A bear behind bars

Animals speak to us in their own way,
but if they spoke with words, what would they say?
One thing I declare, without ANY doubt:
All creatures in cages would say Let me out!’

A dog: Man's best friend

‘Watch my eyes follow your every motion’
A dog would say, ‘my life speaks of devotion’.
A horse would say, ‘A fire burns deep within me
that yearns to run through the countryside, free!’

A lovely lamb

‘You can be soft and cuddly, like I am’
illustrates an adorable little lamb.
‘Soar with your thoughts like I soar through the sky,’
advises a wood pigeon gliding by.

An orphan fawn

‘Help, my mother’s been shot’ a fawn would cry,
who woefully witnessed her mother die.
She’d flee in fear to her cousins and brother,
‘The scariest beast of all killed my mother.’

A sad cow

‘Your blindness to bovines is an oddity,
for you see us as a mere commodity.
It’s so sad; all the exploitation we’ve seen,
We are conscious beings treated like a machine.’

A chimp

‘Some scientists are really quite confused
seeking answers by primates being abused.
I, with eyes that greatly resemble yours,
see madness in some things that man explores.’

Chicken

‘I can’t breathe or move; I’m living in hell!’
cries a chicken from her crowded prison cell.
‘Humans inflict such excruciating pain’
,
With a hook in his mouth, a fish would explain.

A pig

One way we can improve the human race
is to respect those of a different face.
We need to listen in a whole new way
to what animals are trying to say.

A cat

A Mad Serial Killer is Loose in Alaska

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s cruel aerial slaughter has escalated
Commentary By: Captain Paul Watson

Sarah Palin serial killer

Last week, Palin’s wildlife assassins viciously killed 84 wolves, using helicopters, spotter planes and aerial gunners. The sadistic Governor Palin’s Board of Game has approved the use of poison gas and deadly snares to kill defenseless wolf pups and their families in and around their dens. The Nation was spared Sarah Palin with the election of President Barack Obama but she continues to be a mad killer in Alaska.

Too bad she she can’t actually see Russia where Vladimir Putin has just ended the commercial slaughter of seals calling it a bloody cruel business. If the Russians had not sold Alaska to the Americans, the wolves would be much happier today.

There have been very few women serial killers throuhgout history but this right wing wacko evangelical nut job piece of work is the most deadly serial killing woman loose in the world today. No wonder her potential son-in-law backed out of that looney tune family. She’s too much even for a redneck like him. Mrs. family values with her unwed pregnant daughter, a fetish for slaughter and a mouth that spurts without thinking is Alaska’s most dangerous abomination. In a fit of anger for being seen packing by the electorate she has been taking her violent frustrations out on polar bears, beluga whales, bears and wolves.

Sarah Palin is a disgrace to America, a disgrace to women, and a disgrace to humanity. I hope she does run for President in 2012 so she can help us re-elect Obama.

I am wolf. I am as old as the mountains I call home. I have walked this earth long before human beings. I have seen mountains grow from small hills, form from small ravines and rivers born of trickling streams. I have walked with the great ones of eons ago, the great mammoth, saber tooth tigers and many others who have long been lost. I have seen the beginning of mankind.

I am wolf. Tonight I will lay and sleep beside my mate and our children. This may be the last night we will share together upon mother earth for tomorrow many of our brothers and sisters will be slaughtered and perhaps ourselves as well. Our songs will be only a distant memory, fading into the past.

Fawn and Bobcat: Refugees from the fire

These two were “hanging out” in a Santa Barbara County dispatch office all afternoon and evening… Fawn is 3 days old and Bobcat about 3 weeks. The Fawn came from somewhere in the fire and the Bobcat from Carpentaria last week. They immediately bonded and snuggled together under the desk for several hours.

57 Health Benefits of Going Vegan

May-24-2009 By zahnyx

Sunflower

By Alisa Miller

Vegans are frequently misunderstood as fringe eaters with an unnatural passion for animal rights. While many vegans do feel passionately about animals, its time for others to see that a vegan diet and lifestyle go way beyond animal rights. Following a healthy, balanced vegan diet ensures a host of health benefits as well as prevention of some of the major diseases striking people in North America. Find out from the list below how eating vegan can help you in your search for better health.

Nutrition

All of the following nutritional benefits come from a vegan diet full of foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, and soy products.

1. Reduced saturated fats. Dairy products and meats contain a large amount saturated fats. By reducing the amount of saturated fats from your diet, you’ll improve your health tremendously, especially when it comes to cardiovascular health.

2. Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide energy for your body. When you don’t have enough carbohydrates, your body will burn muscle tissue.

3. Fiber. A diet high in fiber (as vegan eating usually is) leads to healthier bowel movements. High fiber diets help fight against colon cancer.

4. Magnesium. Aiding in the absorption of calcium, magnesium is an often overlooked vitamin in importance to a healthy diet. Nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens are an excellent source of magnesium.

5. Potassium. Potassium balances water and acidity in your body and stimulates the kidneys to eliminate toxins. Diets high in potassium have shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

6. Folate. This B vitamin is an important part of a healthy diet. Folate helps with cell repair, generating red and white blood cells, and metabolizing amino acids.

7. Antioxidants. For protection against cell damage, antioxidants are one of the best ways to help your body. Many researchers also believe that antioxidants help protect your body against forming some types of cancer.

8. Vitamin C. Besides boosting your immune system, Vitamin C also helps keep your gums healthy and helps your bruises heal faster. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant.

9. Vitamin E. This powerful vitamin has benefits for your heart, skin, eyes, brain, and may even help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. A diet high in grains, nuts, and dark leafy greens is full of Vitamin E.

10. Phytochemicals. Plant-based foods provide phytochemicals, which help to prevent and heal the body from cancer, boost protective enzymes, and work with antioxidants in the body.

11. Protein. That protein is good for your body is no surprise. It may be a surprise to learn that most Americans eat too much protein and in forms such as red meat that are not healthy ways of getting protein. Beans, nuts, peas, lentils, and soy products are all great ways to get the right amount of protein in a vegan diet.

Sunflower

Disease Prevention

Eating a healthy vegan diet has shown to prevent a number of diseases. Find out from the list below what you could potentially avoid just by switching to a healthy, balanced vegan way of eating.

12. Cardiovascular disease. Eating nuts and whole grains, while eliminating dairy products and meat, will improve your cardiovascular health. A British study indicates that a vegan diet reduces the risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Vegan diets go far in preventing heart attack and stroke.

13. Cholesterol. Eliminating any food that comes from an animal and you will eliminate all dietary cholesterol from your diet. Your heart will thank you for that.

14. Blood pressure. A diet rich in whole grains is beneficial to your health in many ways, including lowering high blood pressure.

15. Type 2 diabetes. Not only is a vegan diet a weapon against Type 2 diabetes, it is also “easier to follow than the standard diet recommended by the American Diabetic Association.” Read more about it here.

16. Prostate cancer. A major study showed that men in the early stages of prostate cancer who switched to a vegan diet either stopped the progress of the cancer or may have even reversed the illness.

17. Colon cancer. Eating a diet consisting of whole grains, along with fresh fruits and vegetables, can greatly reduce your chances of colon cancer.

18. Breast cancer. Countries where women eat very little meat and animal products have a much lower rate of breast cancer than do the women in countries that consume more animal products.

19. Macular degeneration. Diets with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, carrots, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes, can help prevent the onset of age-related macular degeneration.

20. Cataracts. Much the same way macular degeneration is headed off by a vegan diet, cataracts are also thought to be prevented through the intake of the same fruits and vegetables. Produce high in antioxidants are also believed to help prevent cataracts.

21. Arthritis. Eliminating dairy consumption has long been connected with alleviating arthritis symptoms, but a new study indicates that a combination of gluten-free and vegan diet is very promising for improving the health of those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

22. Osteoporosis. Bone health depends on a balance of neither too much or too little protein, adequate calcium intake, high potassium, and low sodium. With a healthy vegan diet, all four of these points set a perfect scenario for preventing osteoporosis.

Sunflower

Physical Benefits

In addition to good nutrition and disease prevention, eating vegan also provides many physical benefits. Find out how a vegan diet makes your body stronger, more energetic, and more attractive.

23. Body Mass Index. Several population studies show that a diet without meat leads to lower BMIs–usually an indicator of a healthy weight and lack of fat on the body.

24. Weight loss. A healthy weight loss is a typical result of a smart vegan diet. Eating vegan eliminates most of the unhealthy foods that tend to cause weight issues. Read more about weight loss and a vegan diet here.

25. Energy. When following a healthy vegan diet, you will find your energy is much higher.

26. Healthy skin. The nuts and vitamins A and E from vegetables play a big role in healthy skin, so vegans will usually have good skin health. Many people who switch to a vegan diet will notice a remarkable reduction in blemishes as well.

27. Longer life. Several studies indicate that those following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle live an average of three to six years longer than those who do not.

28. Body odor. Eliminating dairy and red meat from the diet significantly reduces body odor. Going vegan means smelling better.

29. Bad breath. Vegans frequently experience a reduction in bad breath. Imagine waking up in the morning and not having morning breath.

30. Hair. Many who follow vegan diets report that their hair becomes stronger, has more body, and looks healthier.

31. Nails. Healthy vegan diets are also responsible for much stronger, healthier nails. Nail health is said to be an indicator of overall health.

32. PMS. When switching to a vegan diet, many women tell how PMS symptoms become much less intense or disappear altogether. The elimination of dairy is thought to help with those suffering with PMS.

33. Migraines. Migraine suffers who go on vegan diets frequently discover relief from their migraines. Read more about the food-migraine connection in this article.

34. Allergies. Reduction in dairy, meat, and eggs is often tied to alleviation of allergy symptoms. Many vegans report much fewer runny noses and congestion problems.

Sunflower

Too Much in the American Diet

The typical American diet not only consists of too much food, it also relies on too much of unnecessary food products or toxins. The following list explains how a vegan diet can eliminate these problems.

35. Animal proteins. The average American eats twice as much protein as necessary for a healthy diet and much of that is from red meat. Getting protein from beans and grains is much healthier and reduces the risk for osteoporosis (see above).

36. Cow’s milk dairy. The human body is not designed to digest cow milk and cow milk dairy products, yet the idea of milk being healthy is pushed through advertising. As many as 75% of people in the world may be lactose intolerant and many people suffer from undiagnosed milk allergies or sensitivities. By eliminating cow’s milk from your diet, you are improving your overall health.

37. Eggs. Many nutritionists believe that the number of eggs in the American diet is too high. While sometimes disputed, it has been shown that eggs can raise cholesterol levels.

38. Mercury. Most of the fish and shellfish consumed has mercury in it. While some fish have less than others, it is almost impossible not to be putting mercury in your body when you eat fish.

39. Sugar. Most people have heard that Americans consume way too much sugar. Relying on other sweeteners that are not synthetic, processed, or derived from animal products is a healthier way to eat. Many vegans do not eat processed sugar due to the fact that most of the cane sugar is refined through activated charcoal, most of which comes from animal bones.

Beautiful sunflower! Pictures, Images and Photos

Other Benefits

In addition to the health benefits above, following a vegan lifestyle and diet also provides these benefits as well. From helping the environment to avoiding serious bacterial infections, learn other benefits to eating the vegan way below.

40. Animals. Many people begin a vegan diet out of concern for animals. Whether opposed to the conditions of animals intended for food or eating animals in general, going vegan will help your conscience rest easily.

41. Environment. Growing plants takes much fewer resources than growing animals. By eating vegan, you can help reduce the toll on the environment.

42. E. coli. E. coli comes from eating contaminated red meat and is the leading cause of bloody diarrhea. Young children, those with compromised immune systems, and elderly people can become extremely ill or die from E. coli. Eating vegan means completely avoiding the risk of E. coli infection.

43. Salmonella. Another gastrointestinal illness from animal products, salmonella food poisoning is closely related to E. coli. The most frequent way people contract salmonella food poisoning is through contact with raw eggs or raw chicken meat from chickens infected with salmonella. Again, going vegan means eliminating this risk altogether.

44. Mad cow disease. It’s safe to say that most people would want to avoid contracting a fatal, non-treatable disease. One way to ensure you don’t get Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is by not eating animals infected with mad cow disease. While the incidence of mad cow disease is not reportedly so high in North America, it does exist.

45. Global food supply. Feeding grain to animals meant as food sources reduces the amount of food that is available to underdeveloped nations. Many people will go hungry while that same food they could be eating is given to animals raised for slaughter. Eating vegan ensures that you have removed yourself from the participation of this imbalance.

46. Hormone consumption. Eating animals that have been given hormones to speed growth (a common practice in the meat industry) means those hormones go into your body. Not only can this disrupt the natural balance of your hormones, but some of the hormones given to animals have shown to cause tumor growth in humans.

47. Antibiotics. Antibiotics are frequently given to feed animals, which can lead to bacterial resistance. Many of the antibiotics used to treat human infections are also used in feed animals.

Summer yum: Peach Papaya Smoothie

Peach Papaya Smoothie: Creamy, Light and Dreamy

Happy Healthy Life
by Kathy

Peach Papaya Smoothie

Peach Papaya Smoothie (vegan)
Serves two

1 1/2 cups frozen papaya
5 frozen strawberries
1/2-1 container peach soy yogurt
5 coconut water ice cubes
1 small banana, fresh or frozen
1 cup soy milk
1/4 cup fruit juice (pineapple, mango, orange, apple other)

To make:

Add liquids, yogurt, frozen fruit and ice.
Leave out a bit of the liquid to add slowly mid blend.
Blend ingredients.
(Any raw ingredients like the banana should be added at the end of the blending process-then blend on low.)

Light and creamy

Notes: It is optional to add 1 tsp of agave. Using a ripe banana will aide in sweetness.

*Adding the whole yogurt container will make your smoothie creamier rather than frosty and thick.
*Adjust the liquids to get your ideal thickness consistency.
*Frozen peaches can also be added to this smoothie in place of or in addition to the strawberries.
* If using a raw banana, add it at the end of the blending.
*If using a frozen banana, let it thaw just a tad so it is not rock hard.
*optional ingredients: shredded raw coconut, wheat germ, spirulina powder, raw almonds.

Healthy Smoothie

*Since frozen papaya and strawberries are both only about 50 calories per cup, this is a light and diet-friendly smoothie. Make it lighter by adding unsweetened or plain yogurt and/or light soy milk and remove the fruit juice. However, as is, this smoothie is high in nutrients and packed with healthy foods.

*Add some green super food powder or spirulina powder for an extra nutrition kick. The color will change, but the taste won’t if you use a high quality brand of green food.
